Definition
Subtext is the underlying meaning beneath what characters say or do — the unspoken thoughts, feelings, or intentions that the audience must infer. Writers use subtext to add depth and realism, since real people rarely state their true feelings directly.

- 1 A character saying 'I'm fine' while clenching their fists — the subtext reveals they are angry
- 2 In a job interview scene, a character asks about 'company culture' but really wants to know if the boss is difficult
