Revision strategies.
Definition
Techniques writers use to improve their drafts by rethinking content, organization, clarity, and style. Revision goes beyond fixing grammar — it involves re-seeing the entire piece to strengthen arguments, cut unnecessary content, and improve flow.
How it works · 6 phases
Step by step.
- Read your draft aloud to hear awkward phrasing and unclear passages.
- Check that your thesis or main idea is clear and consistently supported.
- Evaluate the organization — does each paragraph logically follow the previous one?
- Strengthen weak evidence by adding examples, quotes, or analysis.
- Cut repetitive or off-topic content that doesn't serve the main argument.
- Revise sentences for clarity, variety, and conciseness.
Examples
Real-world.
- 1 Rearranging body paragraphs so the strongest argument comes last for impact
- 2 Replacing a vague claim like "it was bad" with specific evidence
- 3 Cutting an entire paragraph that repeats a point already made
