Definition
A number consisting of a whole number and a proper fraction combined, such as 3½. Mixed numbers can be converted to improper fractions for easier computation and converted back for cleaner presentation.

Step by step.
- To convert to an improper fraction: multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and place over the original denominator.
- To convert from an improper fraction: divide the numerator by the denominator; the quotient is the whole number and the remainder is the new numerator.

- 1 3½ = 7/2 as an improper fraction
- 2 2¾ + 1½ = 11/4 + 3/2 = 11/4 + 6/4 = 17/4 = 4¼
