Definition
Elements are classified as metals, nonmetals, or metalloids based on their physical and chemical properties. Metals are generally shiny, conductive, malleable, and tend to lose electrons. Nonmetals are poor conductors and tend to gain electrons. Metalloids have intermediate properties and are often used as semiconductors.
