Definition

A reading comprehension framework in which the main idea is the central message of a text and the supporting details are the facts, examples, reasons, and evidence that develop or prove that central message. Identifying both helps readers understand and summarize what they read.

  1. Read the full passage to get an overall sense of the topic.
  2. Identify the topic sentence or thesis that states the central point.
  3. Locate supporting details such as facts, statistics, examples, or anecdotes.
  4. Determine how each detail connects to and supports the main idea.
  5. Summarize the passage by restating the main idea and key supporting points.
