Interference.

Definition

The phenomenon that occurs when two or more waves overlap in the same space. Constructive interference happens when wave crests align, producing a larger amplitude. Destructive interference occurs when a crest meets a trough, reducing or canceling the wave.

Examples

Real-world.

  • 1 Noise-canceling headphones using destructive interference to reduce unwanted sound
  • 2 Colorful patterns on soap bubbles caused by thin-film interference of light
  • 3 Two speakers producing loud and quiet zones in a room
