Futur simple.

Definition

The futur simple is the simple future tense in French, used to describe actions that will happen in the future. For regular verbs, it is formed by adding specific endings to the infinitive. It is more formal than the futur proche and often used for predictions or promises.

How it works · 3 phases

Step by step.

  1. Take the infinitive form of the verb (for -re verbs, drop the final 'e').
  2. Add the future endings: -ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont.
  3. For irregular verbs, use the special stems (e.g., 'être' → ser-, 'avoir' → aur-, 'aller' → ir-) then add the same endings.
Examples

Real-world.

  • 1 'Je parlerai' — I will speak
  • 2 'Nous finirons' — We will finish
  • 3 'Il sera content' — He will be happy (irregular stem 'ser-')
Key Fact
