English

Connotation and denotation.

Definition

Two layers of word meaning. Denotation is a word's literal, dictionary definition, while connotation is the emotional feeling or cultural association the word carries. Understanding both helps readers interpret texts more deeply and helps writers choose words with precision.

Examples

Real-world.

  • 1 'Home' denotes a place where one lives, but connotes warmth, safety, and belonging
  • 2 'Snake' denotes a reptile, but can connote deceit or danger
  • 3 'Childlike' and 'childish' share a denotation (like a child) but differ in connotation (innocent vs. immature)
