Science

Concentration.

Definition

Concentration measures the amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solution or solvent. Common units include molarity (mol/L), molality (mol/kg solvent), percent composition, and parts per million (ppm).

Examples

Real-world.

  • 1 A 1 M NaCl solution contains 1 mole of sodium chloride per liter of solution
  • 2 Blood glucose concentration is normally about 70-100 mg/dL
  • 3 Environmental scientists measure pollutant levels in parts per million or parts per billion
Key Fact

Molarity (M) = moles of solute รท liters of solution.
